Edvard Munch

Edvard Munch`s intensely evocative treatment of psychological themes built upon some of the main tenets of late 19th-century Symbolism and greatly influenced German Expressionism in the early 20th century. With a great deal of sensitivity his paintings reflect psychological borderline situations such as fear, disease or death, but also love and eroticism. The intense and often dark nuances of color underline the meaning of the paintings which often deal with the conflicts of the human soul. Edvard Munch was born in 1863 in Loeten, Norway, and died in 1944 in Oslo. His artistic development took him to Paris and Berlin, where the exhibition of his works in 1892 caused a scandal. His oil painting “The Scream”, or “The Cry” (1893), can be seen as a symbol of modern spiritual anguish.
